VARIABLE: Real- Able to be changed Math- Letters, in Algebra are called Variables. Variables are used to take the place of real numbers. Example- 2+4+N+6+8=? (N=4) The answer would be 24! These definitions were similar because you are able to CHANGE the variables by real numbers!
Inequality: Math: An inequality in math is when two quantities aren't equal to each other. When two quantities aren't equal it means that one is more than the other, the symbols that you use are < for greater than, and > for less than. Ex: 3<7, 1>0 Real Life: In real life, inequality means that something is unequal or unfair.
I think that the two words are similar because they both mean that things are not equal two each other.
Irrational (numbers) In math, an irrational number is a number that neither terminates or repeats, (i.e. 2.34567502315673210 etc.) Note how the decimal is repeating completely randomly. In real life, Irrational means, "Not consistent with or using reason."
They are actually slightly similar to each other because there is no way to really predict the decimal. In real life it also pretty much means unpredictable, therefore the meanings are similar.
Base: Real World Definition:The foundation or starting point, or the lowest point. Math Definition:The number that is being raised to a power in an exponential expression (the bottom number). Example: 4^6 (the first number is the base).
These two definitions of the word are similar because they are both the foundation for something, or they are both the bottom part.
Rational (numbers): Real World: Something that is reasonable or agreeable Math: Any real number that can be expressed as a fraction and a decimal. Ex. 5 = 5/1
These two definitions are different because numbers can't be really be reasonable.
Area: Real world meaning:Any particular extent of space or surface. Math: The inside region of a two-dimensional figure measured in square units.
If the height of a square is 2 cm and the base is 3, the area would be 6 square centimeters. You find the area of a square by multiplying the base and the height.
The two definitions are similar because they both have to do with space.
Members: In math, members are part of a set and most of the time, are numbers. In the “real world” this term has pretty much the same meaning. Members are part of a group or a certain way life. Overall, this term doesn’t really have any differences between the two different contexts.
Variables (algebra) - In algebra variables are a quantity or function that assume a given value or a set of given values
Variable (real world) - something that is likely to change
These definitions are different because, in algebra, variables may change for each problem, but WITHIN each problem a variable would remain constant. This means that it would not change.

ReplyDeletereal life definition: Coordinate- to bring order or to organize something
ReplyDeleteMath definition: Coordinate- the label of a point on a number line or a graph. Ex: Find the coordinate a=3 on the number line.
0 3
<--|-----*------>
the point on the number line is not the coordinate, but the label itself.
* hope my keyboard number line works, i've been editing it so i might turn out right.

Elements:
ReplyDeleteElements(real world version)- a component or constituent of a whole or one of the parts into which a whole may be resolved by analysis.
Elements(math version)- In algebra the elements of a set are usually numbers.
{} are used to enclose an element.
ex. {3,4,5,}
I think they are similar because an element in real world means its apart of an object and in math an element is a part of a set.

rational
ReplyDeletemath terms- a rational number is expressed by a ratio of two integers.
real world- to be reasonable and sensible
they are similar because you can express both , whether in a fraction or a feeling
