Blogging on Blogging -Reflections -BoB Chapter 1

There is a BIG difference between learning and just being there. Learning is an interactive sport; not a spectator sport. There has to be a conversation between us, back and forth, as we work through the material. Learning doesn't happen when I talk and you listen; learning happens when you have a conversation -- with me and with each other.

I am going to offer you up to 5 bonus points on your test with completion of a simple assignment.  I would like you to post your reflections on the material covered so far.  Just comment on this post.  To get that bonus on your test, the kind of post I'd like you to make should have one or more of these characteristics:
  • A reflection on a particular class (like the first paragraph above-how did that class enhance your learning?).
  • A reflective comment on your progress in the course.
  • A comment on something that you've learned that you thought was "cool".
  • A comment about something that you found very hard to understand but now you get it! Describe what sparked that "moment of clarity" and what it felt like.
  • Have you come across something we discussed in class out there in the "real world" or another class? Describe the connection you made.

  1. One class that enhanced my learning was when I did the scribe post. I had to take more in depth notes so I could recall the entire period when I got home to write it. I don't think I have made a ton of progress so far because it is mostly review of what we did last year but when we start learning new things I will start making progress. I thought the thing that we learned yesterday about how the square root of 25 and the square root of 5 to the 2nd power will equal the same thing after you changed it a lot. After we learned exponents I saw scientific notation on the news.

  2. A class that enhanced my learning would probably be the other day when we learned about exponents, and all of the different rules and ways you have to deal with them because I always forgot which different rules you would have to use, but now I understand it a lot better. I think that I have only made a little progress because like Patrick said it's mostly reviewing things from last year. I thought it was cool that if you don't always follow the order of operations, you can get different answers. It was hard for me to understand absolute values with the negative signs can be inside or outside of the absolute value lines, but now I understand it more and it feels good to know that I can do problems like that now. We did some problems on taxes which helped me understand how math is applied in the real world too.

  3. A class that enhanced my learning would be the one where I did the notes for 1.3 and 1.4. I was ahead in learning about lesson 1.4 and I found that to be very helpful because when I was in class the next day I was looking at the imformation for the second time, rather than looking at it for the very first time and being confused. I feel that in A2A I have progressed in understanding the imformation. Rather than feeling ok about what I learned but not really understanding it I feel that I solidly know what we have studied and understand it. I thought that something that was really cool that I have learned was the curve of forgetting. It really made me understand how much I need to study imformation before I will remember and understand it. Something That I thought was hard and now understand is additive inverse. Last year I was confused about what it was but now I understand it and find it really simple. The moment that sparked my understanding was when we were doing problems on additive inverse in class and I realized that it was just the opposite. A math consept that we have studied that connect to the real world is negative numbers because when you buy something or owe money you are subtracting from the money you have. Negative numbers really help me to understand that.

  4. Today really enhanced my learning! I felt like our whole class discussed everything as a group and we all learnt new things. We weren't embarrassed to get answers wrong. It is SO helpful reading the notes everyone took on 1.3 and 1.4 before I did the home work! I feel like I am defiantly progressing. Math isn't a subject that I dread to do home work for. I really like how we use the internet to learn! It makes it fun and exciting! I think that all of the exponent rules are really cool! I especially like the one with the square roots! My moment of clarity came from when we discussed the very long problem involving exponents in class. I realized that i need to take my time and show my work instead of doing everything mentally. If you use mental math for problems, you can always mess it up in your head, but when it is on paper it is much easier to refer back to where you started. In the math home work, one question mentioned how one would use the commutative property in real life. That really made me realize and understand that math doesn't just happen at school and for home work. Math will always be around and will always be a really helpful thing to understand well.

  5. One class that enhanced my learning was when we went over exponents. I have always had a hard time understanding the properties but now that I refreshened my brain on the topic, I feel more confident about it. I feel like I am progressing in this math course because I like that we go slowly enough so everyone understands it instead of zooming through the chapters. This helps me. I think the coolest thing we have learned so far is that you cannot have a negative sign in a square root because then it would be no solution. On thing I did not understand at first was rational numbers. Once I practiced some problems and I figured it out I felt good and accomplished! One connection I have made with math and the real world( french class!) is all numbers. We have been learning numbers. It is weird learning numbers and adding in another language. I think it is cool though how everyone in the world does this!

  6. I feel like I have made some good progress in this class so far. Taking notes on the sections definently help me because sometimes i'm tempted to just skip ahead to the problems and not read any of that but when i do read and take notes i understand the setion a lot better.Having notes to look back at is good for me because if i get stuck on a problem i can just scan through my notes and figure it out. Also the daily quizzes help me a lot because having a quiz everyday gets me in the habit of checking my work more thoroughly. And the material stays fresh in my head.

  7. The class I did my scribe post on really enhanced my learning because negative numbers usually confuse me. I took really good notes that day, so now I can actually do problems with negative numbers in them.
What I think was really cool was the forgetting curve. It makes a lot of sense. The other day, in Spanish, we learned something new. So when I went home, I reviewed my notes and that helped me remember what I learned better.
I feel like I'm really progressing in math because we do things slowly and I can ask questions if I need to instead of being confused all the time.

  8. For me, it was interesting learning about what we are really doing when we subtrahend. In every other math class, we just learn how to do the problems then assume that thats how it all goes. I don't think that before this year, the class as a whole has taken the time to really dig down into math and see why we are learning how to do all of these equations. I also think, like everyone else, that the scribe post is also a great way to learn math. It's a great way to remember what we went over. Learning curve! Also this year was the first time i had EVER heard of a teacher wanting to teach us about ways to learn in their class. And it really worked. I definitely feel like I can remember so much more than I did in math last year.

  9. The one class in particular that really enhanced my learning was the class when we went out and took pictures of things in the regular world but they also have to do with things in the math world. This helped me because I realised that math is all around me and not just something out of a book
