Special Types of Factoring

Difference of Squares:
x2-y2=(x+y)(x-y)

Perfect Square Trinomial:
x2+2xy+y2=(x+y)^2

Difference of Cubes:
x3-y3=(x-y)(x2+xy+y2)

Sum of Cubes:
x3-y3=(x-y)(x2-xy+y2)

    Factor each polynomial.
    4a2-64
    There is a common factor of 4.
    4a2-64=4(a2-16) -Factor out the common factor.
    = 4(a+4)(a-4) Factor out the difference of squares.
